Biography

Otto Barber was born in the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

Otto Barber was born 22nd January 1886 in Lochiel, a small town in the Mid North of South Australia, 125 km (78 mi) north of Adelaide and known for its natural salt mining. He was the second son of William Barber and Emma Plush. [1] [2]

Otto married Alice May Coles on 27 Feb 1913 at the Methodist Church, Penwortham, Clare, South Australia. [3] [4] The couple had:

  1. a daughter, Edna Gwendoline Mary (1915-), [5] and
  2. a son, Calvin Vivian Clarence (1918-) [6]
Otto Barber is a Military Veteran.
Served in the Australian Army Volunteer Defence Corps 1942-45
10th Battalion (SA)

On 28th April 1942 at Lochiel, aged 56 years, Otto enlisted in the Australian Army's Volunteer Defence Corps. He was allocated to South Australia's 10th Battalion, based at Gawler. He was discharged on 6th October 1945. [7] For his service during the war he was awarded the Australia Service Medal 1939-1945. [8]

Aged 78 years and having been widowed for seven years, Otto passed away on 28th December 1964. [9] [10] He was buried at Lochiel Cemetery, Wakefield Regional Council, South Australia. [11] [12]
