Corporal William Barbee served in the United States Civil War.

From Find A Grave:

Enlisted in Wake County at age 24, May 28, 1861, for the war as a Private. Wounded in the leg at Gaines' Mill, Virginia, June 27, 1862. Promoted to Corporal on August 1, 1863. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.
His home was on the Barbee Road just below the Tyler Barbee estate.
He only married once and that was to S. V. Rebecca Trice, daughter of Chesley Page Trice and Susan Elizabeth Leigh. They had eight children, 5 sons and 3 daughters.
He is buried at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church where he was member most of his life. He is buried with his wife and daughter, Annie. A son, Henry Bunion Barbee, aka "Bun" and his family are also buried in the cemetery. His sister Milly is buried here and so is his younger brother, William C. Barbee. His father, William A. Barbee and mother, Eliza Barbee are both here. His sister Margaret Ann Barbee Scott is buried with her husband, Joseph J. Scott, not far away.
A quiet, gentle man who survived a brutal war and came home and raised a family of kind, caring and beautiful people, steadfast in their belief of family and God. Rest In Peace.
