Walter Baptiste was born in 1894 to Thomas Baptiste and Felicie Blanchard. [1](There are several variations of the last name. He changed the spelling of his last name to Batiste around 1920.)
Walter married Alma Trepagnier on 28 Jan 1909 in Orleans County, Louisiana. [2]
Walter registered for the Draft on 5 June 1917. He lived at 936 St. Claude Street and declared support for his wife and 14 children. [3]
Walter died 24 August 1950 Orleans, Louisiana and is buried in Holt Cemetery, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana [4] [5]
1910 Census New Orleans Ward 5, Orleans, Louisiana; 936 St Claude Street; Walter, a blacksmith in a factory, and his wife Alma, a washwoman, lived in the household of Alma's mother. Mary Trepagnier, the matriarch (a washwoman), lived with much of her family. Son Gustave Mansion (a janitor in a club) as well as daughter Elmer (Alma) and her husband Walter, daughter Mercedes Trepagnier (house girl for a private family), son Arthur Trepagnier and her mother Mercelite Lewis (cook in a private family). Other family members in the household included widowed brother Henry Francois (slauter house) and his daughter Olivia (cook in a private family), a brother Louis Suain (baker in a bakery), his wife of 13 years Fannie (maid for a private family), their children Louis Jr, Joseph, Emily, Albert and Herman. Additional member were niece Oliva Francois (washwoman), daughter Mercedes (washwoman) and her husband Joseph Stevenson (fruit peddler).
1930 Census New Orleans (Districts 1-250), Orleans, Louisiana; Walter (porter in a bakery shop) and Alma (washwoman) lived on 1215 St. Phillip Street with children Alma, Corrine, Ferdinand, Henry, Arthur and Norman. [7]
1940 Census New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana; 1404 ST Phillip St, Walter (porter in a bakery) and Irma (Alma) (no occupation) lived with their youngest children; Alma (waitress in a private hospital), Ferdinand (porter), Miriam, Norman and Lionel. [8]
1950 Census New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana; Walter (store porter in a bakery) and Alma T lived with their children Norman M and Lionel M., and daughter Miriam B Reed and her son Walter Jr. [9]
