I am interested in gathering information about my fathers side of the family. My father Franc Bantjes stated that his grandfather possibly Jan Bantjes discovered the first gold in Johannes burg. I want to find out if this is possible and also to discover my ancestry.

Hi Jeanette

There are 69 other Banjes profiles on WikiTree. I'm South African too.

Happy hunting!

Hi Pam

Thanks for your message. I will get searching. It seems difficult to find information for South Africa but I will keep going. Happy hunting to you also.

Many Thanks

Jeanette

Hi Jeanette,

You are quite right, South African research is a little more challenging in that we don't have as many records to refer to as many of the other countries, but we do have fantastic probate, baptism and marriage records at familysearch.org that often come with images that contain some wonderful bits of extra information like residence, witnesses and sometimes even parents.

The trick can often be in trying to get far back enough to really begin to be able to use the records at familysearch. For times like these I use a website called gendatabase.com, unfortunately it is a paysite but it allows you to do free searches which can sometimes help with birth and death dates. Tip: to search for an unknown name use the percentage symbol (%).

Another site I love to use is eGGSA.org, it's the electronic version of the Genealogical Society of South Africa. They have a great section for graves and newspapers

WikiTree also has a research tool that makes finding reliable sources easier. I use it all the time and it helps me remember different places to check. To give it a try, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research, scroll down near the bottom of that list, and select Research with RootsSearch (use your WikiTree email & password). There are over 20 websites to access from there. You can read more about the tool in the RootSearch FAQ. You can also find it at the bottom of the right hand column on your ancestors profiles, under the heading "Research"

I hope this helps, and anytime you have questions don't be shy to let me know.

Kindest regards, Pam

Some more South African WikiTree research tips:
Here’s a great page to help with resources South African Roots Sources, and Peggy already mentioned the South African Roots Project, which also the sub-projects:
Anglo Boer War 1899-1902,
Voortrekkers
Cape of Good Hope.
In South African research we have a few quirks and rules ~ a particular one is to please use the correct Country Naming as was used at the time of the event. Another one is Name fields on profiles

Thankyou for the information Peggy. I cant waite to get stuck in and hopefully discover some new information.

Many Thanks

Jeanette

Hi and Thankyou. I am hoping to research some family on my fathers side. I have reason to believe I could be related to Jan Bantjes who discovered gold in Johannesburg as this was rumoured within my family. Its a long story but I lost touch with my South African family many years ago and my father passed away so have little information but hopefully I can discover some on here.
Hi Jeanette!

You're welcome to search the database and use the Genealogist to Genealogist (G2G) forum for research. For research help, probably the best way to find others searching for your family is the G2G forum. There you could create a new post to introduce yourself and tell others about your quest.

If you decide to add your family and contribute to our shared tree, you will want to upgrade your account to Family Member (it is free). There is a link on your profile under your name, next to “Guest Member” or use this link to upgrade. Just answer the five questions and click on the green box that says "Upgrade”.
