When Hancock Banning was born on May 12, 1865, in Los Angeles, California, his father, Phinneas, was 34 and his mother, Mary, was 17. He married Anne Ophelia Smith in 1891. They had three children during their marriage. He died on August 7, 1925, in his hometown at the age of 60, and was buried in Inglewood, California. He was the son of Phineas Banning and Rebecca Sanford.
