Biography

Riley Franklin Banes was born to George McDowell Banes and Arminda Sims March 17th, 1871 near Polk and Kingsville Townships in NW Missouri.

The sixth of seven children (though, it is believed that two other siblings perished in infancy), the family lived in Polk Township from the 1870 US Census through to the 1876 Missouri State Census.

Riley's father, George McDowell Banes passed away December 27th, 1879 in Kingsville Twp, Johnson County, MO. He was 44 years old.

By the 1880 Census, records show that Riley, his mother, and six siblings were living in Kingsville Twp, Johnson County, MO. Polk and Kingsville Twps are about 6 miles from each other.

December 21, 1896, Riley (25) married Ms. Eliza Evelyn Hand (17) in Scammon, Cherokee County, Kansas. Here, he is listed as a resident and farmer in Keelville, KS, which is near the MO, KS, OK Tri-State border. His parents are listed as Geo. Banes and Arminda Sims. Ms. Hand's parents are listed as James Hand and Amy McClure, both of whom were living in Cherokee County, KS at the time.

March 1st, 1905, the Kansas State Census shows that Riley, his wife Eliza, and four of their children were living in Empire City, Cherokee County, KS. This is about 20 miles east of his previously listed residence in Keelville.

Shortly after, Riley and his family, along with his mother and several of his siblings staked claims to land in eastern New Mexico on the border of Texas, due west of Amarillo.

The 1910 Census shows Riley, his wife Eliza, and their six children, including James Reeford Banes, were living in Endee, Quay County, New Mexico.

By the early 1920s, Riley and his family migrated back through Texas and onto Oklahoma where he would live out the rest of his working days farming until his health no longer permitted it.

In 1953, he and his wife left Durant and moved east to Hugo, OK.

His wife of nearly 70 years, Ms. Eliza, passed away at their home October 30th, 1965 in Hugo, Oklahoma, She was 86 years old.

Riley Franklin Banes would follow less than six years later. He passed away July 15th, 1971. He was 100 years, 3 months, and 28 days old.

Riley and Eliza are buried alongside each other at the Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma.
