Biography

US Black Heritage Project
William Baltimore is a part of US Black heritage.

William Baltimore was born in Virginia c.1838 to parents Thomas Baltimore, a plasterer, and Hannah Self. William was eleven years old when he was counted on the census with them in Washington D.C. in 1850,[1] and twenty-one when he was counted with them there again in 1860.[2]

During the Civil War, he enlisted on 3 November of 1863, and served as a laborer on ships in Washington D.C through November 30, 1864.[3] He also apparently served in Cincinnati's Black Brigade in the Civil War, in Company F., 2nd Regiment, 1867.[4]

After moving to Ohio, he married Sarah E. Gaines c.1865.

They had one son, Edward William Baltimore (1866 - 1927).[5][6]

William, his wife, and their fourteen-year-old son, Edward, were still living in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1880. William was a plasterer,[5]as was his father before him.

William died on 2 March 1919, in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, United States,[7] and was interred in the United American African-American Cemetery in Madisonville, Ohio.[8] The undertaker, who was the informant on the death certificate, gave an incorrect date of birth (1835) and age (83) for William.[9] Sarah, his widow, died in 1924.[10]

  9. All five census records and his enlistment record cited here show his date of birth as c.1838, '39, 40, or '42. His parents married in 1837, so 1838 for their firstborn child is quite likely. (This death certificate error is why his Find a Grave template has the "sameas=no" parameter, visible only on the edit page.)
