Nigel was born in 1873. He was the son of Harington Balfour and Isabelle Kinloch. He attended Eton.
He served in the First World War in the Royal Army Service Corps as a Major then a Lieutenant Colonel. He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.).
He married Grace Annette Marie Madocks, daughter of Henry Robarts Madocks and Hon. Amelia Anne Napier, in 1894. They had children:

He passed away about 1955.
