Biography

Middlesex (historic flag)
Henry Bailey was born in Middlesex, England.

Henry Thomas was born on 23 October 1833 at Shoreditch, Middlesex, England[1], and baptised on 5 October 1834 at St Leonard's, Shoreditch[2]. He was the son of William Bailey, a looking glass maker of New Gloucester Street, and his wife Mary[3] or Ann.

His mother died while he was still young. In 1841 he was living at New Gloucester Street, Shoreditch, Middlesex with his father William (a cabinet maker aged 45), his siblings - William (15), Mary (10) and Emma (6) - and three other people, two apprentices and a housekeeper[4]. He was aged 8. He was still at home at the same address in 1851 with his father William (a widowed looking glass and frame manufacturer aged 55), two sisters - Mary Ann (19) and Emma (15) - and a servant of all work[5]. He was aged 17 and probably working with his father although no occupation was given.

Henry married Mary Elizabeth Coster on 15 May 1853 at Saint Mary, Hendon, Hendon Church End, Barnet, Middlesex[6], and the marriage was registered at Hendon[7]. They had three children.

  1. Henry John William (1854[8] - )
  2. John (1856[9] - )
  3. William Oliver (1858[10] - )

His wife Mary died in 1859 aged 25 years[11]. In 1861 he was a widowed looking glass manufacturer aged 27 living at 3 Prospect Place, St Johns Hackney, Hackney, Middlesex[12][13]. With him were his son Henry (a scholar aged 7), his widowed sister-in-law Louisa Q Penman (32 and no doubt acting as housekeeper) and her daughter Louisa B (a scholar aged 12). Others must have been looking after his younger two children.

Henry married Rose Annie Bright as his second wife in 1864 at West Ham[14]. They had nine children (according to the 1911 Census[15]).

  1. Mary Alice (1865 - )
  2. Edward Ernest (1867 - )
  3. Annie Isabel (1868 - )
  4. Charles Herbert Bright (1869[16] - 1949[17]
  5. Ellen Maud (1871 - )
  6. Percy Stanley (1873 - )
  7. Ralph Norman (1875 - )
  8. Ethel B (1877 - )
  9. (yet to be found, died young)

In 1871 Henry was working in wholesale glass and living at Hackney, Middlesex with

In 1881 he was a furniture looking glass manufacturer aged 47 living in Kidbrooke, Kent with his wife Rose, eight children - Mary A (15), Edward E (14), Annie I (13), Charles H (12), Ellen M (11), Percy S (8), Ralph N (6), all scholars, and Ethel B (4) - and three servants - a governess, a cook and a house maid[19].

Another move by 1891 saw them living at 8 St Germans Place, Charlton Next Woolwich, Woolwich[20]. The family now comprised Henry (a glass merchant holding a fire escape patent and farmer aged 57), his wife Rose (43) and seven children - Mary A (25), Annie I (23), Charles H (a lithographer aged 22), Ellen M (20), Percy S (a clerk to a glass merchant aged 18), Ralph N (a stationer on trial as an apprentice aged 16) and Ethel B (a scholar aged 14)[21]. They had two servants to look after them, a cook and a housemaid.

Henry now aged 67 had retired from being a glass merchant by 1901, and they had moved to 5 Cambridge Road, Colchester, Essex[22]. All the children had left home except Mary A (35 and no doubt looking after her parents). There was a housemaid to help out in the home. In 1911 he was living at the same address[23][15]. His wife Rose A (63) and his two daughters - Mary Alice (45) and Annie Isabel (43) - were with him, and they had a housemaid and a cook.

His wife Rose died in 1914[24]. He was still in Colchester, Essex in 1921 living at 5 Cambridge Road[25] with his two unmarried daughters - Mary Alice (56) and Annie Isabel (52), both doing household duties, and his widowed daughter Ellen Maud Wellington (50). He was a widowed retired wholesale cabinet maker aged 87. They had a cook and a housekeeper to look after them all.

Henry died in 1921 aged 88 years at Colchester, and his death was registered there in the last quarter[26].

Research Notes

The Bailey family tree held by Margaret Bailey Allison shows that Rose was Henry's second wife and that they had eight children. That matches what the Census record shows. (Dickson-4413 00:11, 1 February 2024 (UTC))

The FamilySearch Census list for 1881 is incomplete, with several children and servants missing[27]. (Dickson-4413 01:28, 1 February 2024 (UTC))

The FamilySearch Census for 1911[23] has incorrect information for Henry's occupation (saying he is servant) and their location (at Colchester Castle, Colchester, Essex). The original does not show that. (Dickson-4413 22:32, 1 February 2024 (UTC))
