Baltic German scientist known as the Father of Embryology.[1]
Karl Ernst von Baer was born 28 Feb [Old date system 17 Feb] 1792 in Piep manor, Governorate of Estonia, Russian Empire. (About 1793[2]) He was born into a German noble family, one of ten children.[1]
His parents were Johann Magnus von Baer and Juliane Louise Baer.[3]
He spent his early childhood with his uncle at Lasila manor, Estonia. He initially studied at the Imperial University of Dorpat (Tartu), and later in Germany. He became a professor of zoology at Königsberg University in 1817. He moved to St Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1834.[1]
Carl Von Baer is notable for his studies on the embryonic development of animals. In 1827, he became the first person to observe human ova. He was also interested in the arctic, and initiated Russian studies on permafrost.[1]
Carl Ernst Von Baer, age 27, married August Von Medem on 1 Jan 1820 in Evangelische Kirche Königsberg, Königsberg, Brandenburg, Preußen (Germany).[3][2][4]
He died 28 Nov [Old date system 16 Nov] 1876.[3]
