Thomas Badger was born in Yorkshire, England.

Thomas was born in 1793. His parents were Thomas and Alathea Badger. He was christened on 18 August 1793 at Tinsley, Yorkshire. [1]

In 1810 Thomas Badger was articled to Joseph Wheatley, the leading solicitor in Rotherham and became a partner five years later. In 1819, the year that he married, he set up practice on his own and two years later went to reside and practice at 29 High Street, Rotherham, Yorkshire.

Thomas married Mary Smith on 19 May 1819 at Rotherham, Yorkshire.[2]

In 1829 he was elected coroner for the Upper Division of the Wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill. Thomas presided over many inquests, including those held following several major disasters. They include:

Thomas Badger was Coroner at the inquest of the Huskar Moorend Pit Coal Mine Inundation on 4-Jul-1838
The inquest held on Thursday 6 July 1838 at the Red Lion Inn, Silkstone, Yorkshire into the Huskar Colliery disaster which occurred on 4 July 1838 when 26 children were drowned at the coal mine.


The inquest, held at the Angel Pub, High Street, Masbro, into the Masbro Boat Disaster, Rotherham when about fifty children and a few adult died during the launch of a boat onto the River Don on 14 July 1841.

The inquest held following the Hemingfield Low Elsecar which occurred on 21 December 1852 where 10 lives were lost.

The inquest held following the the Lundhill Colliery Explosion which occurred on 19 February 1857 and where 189 lives were lost.


Thomas Badger had interests in the Sheffield and Rotherham Railway and took a leading role in the formation of the Rotherham Gas Light and Coke Company. In 1839 he was elected President of the Yorkshire Law Society. He also owned property in Rotherham, Yorkshire.

Thomas passed away in 1862, age 69.[3]
