Followed by Frederick V |
Georg Friedrich von Baden-Durlach was born on 30 January 1573 in Baden, the son of Charles II, Margrave of Baden-Durlach and Anna of Veldenz.
He became ruler of Baden-Hachburg in 1604 upon the death of his father, whose lands were divided between his three sons. Due to the fact that Georg Frederich was only 4 years old at the time of his father's death, he had several regents to reign on his behalf over the years, including his mother Anna, Elector Palatine Louis VI, Count Palatine Philip Louis of Neuberg and Duke Luis III "the Pious" of Württemberg. In 1584, his brothers took over his guardianship along with his mother. In 1595, he was declared an adult and began to govern on his own behalf. His first seat of government was in Rötteln Castle, but he later moved to Sulzburg.
Georg and his brothers were divided on the subject of religion, with Georg remaining Lutheran while his brothers converted to Calvinism and Catholicism. He founded a Latin school in his residence in Sulzburg for the education of pastors in his territory due to the affiliation of the school in Durlach with Calvinism and built the Castle Church as well between 1600 and 1610. His efforts and the fact that his brothers pre-deceased him, restoring the integrity of Baden-Durlach, ensured that the Margravate remained Lutheran.
Upon the death of his brothers, the Margravate became whole once again under his rule. He worked to develop a civil code that was more thorough than any other German state of the era and remained in force from 1654 (under the rule of his son Frederick V) until 1809. He also wrote a military treatise for his sons.
With Juliane Ursula (Salm-Neufville) von Salm-Neufville (1572-1614):
With Agathe of Erbach-Breuberg (1581-1621):
He had no children with his third wife, Elizabeth Stolz, the daughter of his secretary.
Georg Frederich was one of the initial combatants in the 30 Years War, as one of the principals in the Bohemian Revolt in 1622. He joined the Protestant Union and was appointed a general. Following his defeat in the Battle of Wimpfen in 1622, he abdicated in favor of his eldest son, but returned to the war in 1627 as a lieutenant general for the Danish army. Following his defeat at the Battle of Oldenburg in Holstein in September, he retired to Strasburg.
Georg Frederich died on 24 September 1638 in Strasburg and was buried there. His remains are thought to have been moved to the St Michael Church in Pforzheim in 1650 and reinterred in the crypt there.[1]
Baden-Durlach is the most correct last name at birth, since Baden was divided before he was born and remained that way for his entire life.
