Biography

Marie Elisabeth Wilhelmine von Baden was born on 7 September 1782 in Karlsruhe, Margraviate of Baden, Holy Roman Empire, and died on 20 April 1808 in Bruchsal, Grand Duchy of Baden. She was a German noblewoman and the Duchess of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel by marriage.

Marie was the daughter of Karl Ludwig von Baden and Landgravine Amalie von Hessen-Darmstadt (1754-1832) She was a member of the House of Zähringen.

Marie married Duke Friedrich Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel on 1 November 1802 in Karlsruhe. The marriage was part of the complex network of alliances between German noble families. The couple had two sons:

• Karl II. von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1804–1873), who succeeded his father as Duke of Brunswick.
• Wilhelm August Ludwig Maximilian von Braunschweig (1806–1884), who held various military positions.

Marie died prematurely at the age of 25, on 20 April 1808, in Bruchsal. Her death left her sons, Karl and Wilhelm, to be raised without their mother during a time of significant political upheaval in Europe.
