Matilda was born September 13, 1889, in the town of Fölnak (now known as Felnac),[1] which was either in Hungary or Romania, depending on country borders at that time.[2]
Matilda (whose last name was incorrectly shown as Bockman) married John Eichert November 7, 1909 in New Jersey.[3]
Following the tragic loss of their first child in early infancy,[2] in 1920, the family's last name is incorrectly shown as Eickert. Matilda and John were well established in their home at 122 Church Street in Milltown, Middlesex, New Jersey, with chidren Barbara (age 9), Charles (age 7), Joseph (age 5), Frank (age 3), and newborn Anna (shown as Diana). John was a tailor, working in a tailor shop.[4]
In 1930, the family's last name is incorrectly shown as Eichart. Matilda and John paid $85 per month rent for their home at 45 Hassart Stree in New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey, where they lived with children Barbara (age 18), Charles (age 16), Joseph (age 14), Frank (age 12), Anna (age 10), Clara (age 7), John (age 3), and Matthew (shown as Mattachen, age 2). John was a tailor in a clothing store, Barbara was a cigar maker in a cigar factory, and Charles was a salesman in a drug store.[5]

Matilda and John were listed as Mathilde Bachmann from Fölnak and Johann Eichert from Billed in the "German-Hungarian Family Calendar" in 1937.[6]
In 1940 Matilda and John paid $35 per month rent for their home at 155 Woodbridge Avenue in Highland Park, New Jersey, where they lived with children Carl (age 26), Frank (age 22), Anna (age 20), Clara (age 17), John (age 15), and Matthew (age 12).[7] Strangely, there is a second census record for 1940, in which an incorrect additional child Richard (age 9) is shown.[8]
After John's death in 1948,[2] Matilda lived with her daughter Barbara, a single parent struggling to raise her two young sons while supporting the family. Her grandsons returned from school to the aroma of her fresh baked bread and frugally prepared, yet tasty and nourishing, meals. [2]

Matilda made her home there, helping to raise her grandsons, then continuing to live with her daughter. Her death on February 28, 1970[9]
left a large void in the lives of her seven remaining children, eighteen grandchildren, and more than twenty great grandchildren.[2]
Matilda was buried in the Van Liew Cemetery in North Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States beneath a stone shared with her husband John.[9]
