Peleg Babcock was a Civil Servant in the American Revolution.

Peleg Babcock was born 4 October 1748 to Oliver Babcock Jr. and Patience Pendleton in Hopkinton, Rhode Island.[1]

He married Lucy Maxson, daughter of Samuel and Ruth (Rogers) Maxson, on 14 December 1769 in Hopkinton.[2] And they had the following children

  1. Maxson Babcock, b. 20 October 1770[3]
  2. Peleg Babcock Jr., b. 29 May 1772[3]
  3. Polly Babcock, b. 1774 [4]

Peleg and his family appeared on the Rhode Island census of 1774, pg 149 showing 1 white male over 16, 2 white males under 16, 1 white female over 16 and 1 white female under 16

Lucy died on 5 July 1775.[3]

Peleg married, second, Ruth Maxson, Lucy's sister, on 18 January 1776, also in Hopkinton.[5] After the birth of their first child, Peleg and Ruth removed to Leyden District (aka Bernardston Gore), Bernardston, Massachusetts with his father and some siblings. Children of Peleg and Ruth (Maxson) Babcock:[6][7]

  1. Solomon Babcock, b. 2 September 1776[3] in Rhode Island[8] m. Amy Morgan
  2. Lucy Babcock, b. 8 August 1778 in Leyden District[3]
  3. John Babcock, b. 21 July 1780 m. Phebe Wilbur[4]
  4. Luke Babcock, b. 22 May 1782, d. 11 December 1783[9]
  5. Tabor Babcock, b. 30 April 1784[3]
  6. Jared Babcock, b. 27 February 1786 m. Anna Stedman[4]

  8. Polly Babcock, b. 3 August 1790, d. 16 March 1806[10] d. 1806 m. George Denison

Ruth died in July 1823.[11]

Peleg married, third, Phebe (Briggs) Denison, the widow of his former son-in-law by daughter Lucy, on 16 March 1824.[12]

Peleg died 12 November 1834 in Leyden.[13]

He had executed his last will on 31 January 1825 in front of Asa Hebard, Hezekiah Newcomb and George W. Hebart, who proved it on 10 February 1835. In it, he made bequets to:[14]

  • wife Phebe [(Briggs) (Denison) Babcock]
  • four sons Maxson Babcock, Solomon Babcock, John Babcock, Jared Babcock
  • son Peleg Babcock Jr.
  • sons Tabor Babcock (executor) and Benjamin Babcock
  • grand daughter Anna Denison
  • grand daughter Olive Babcock
  • grand son Arad Denison
  • my wife's son Jabez Denison

The Denison grandchildren were children of Lucy (Babcock) Denison (and also step-children of his third wife.

Research Notes

  • Care should be observed not to conflate this Peleg Babcock with Peleg Babcock, son of Hezekiah and Mary (Peckham) Babcock, whose wife was Lucy (Babcock) Babcock. Both same-named couples were contemporaneous within proximate geography.
  • The Babcock Genealogy had some trouble with Polly and Lucy Babcock -- it gives the wrong birth date and mother for Polly, and assigns her as the wife of George Denison, when it was actually Lucy who was his wife. Lucy did not die on the date given in this book, and she was not unmarried when she died.

Oliver and his brother Peleg are born 4 months apart. Something has to be wrong here.
