Biography

Life in England

Elizabeth (D'Azire) Speed was born on 8 Feb 1781.[1] Her parents were Robert and Phebe Azire and she was baptised at St James, Clerkenwell, England, on 18 Mar 1781. [2]

Elizabeth married John Fulloon on 11 Apr 1802 at St Mary, Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets, England. [3]

Together they had 7 children:

  1. John b1803-1861
  2. Eliza b1805-1807
  3. Maria b1806-1869
  4. Eliza b1809-1873
  5. Matilda b1811-1877
  6. Henry b1813-1815
  7. Charles b1817-1899

Colonial New South Wales

Elizabeth, John and children emigrated to Australia as free passengers on the convict vessel Brothers, that arrived in 1824. Tragically, it is believed John died enroute. The Brothers arrived in Port Jackson on Friday 7 May 1824.

On arrival in the colony, Elizabeth Fulloon was employed as Superintendent of the Female Factory at Parramatta. According to the Historical Records of Australia, Elizabeth was appointed to the position by Lord Bathurst from Downing Street, London[4][5][6]:

Under Secretary Horton to Sir Thomas Brisbane
Sir, Downing Street,
5th Novr., 1823.
I am directed by Lord Bathurst to acquaint you that he has appointed Mrs. Fulloon to be Superintendent of the Female Factory at Parramatta with a Salary of 100 pounds per annum, and, as her husband will be required to superintend a different branch of the Factory, he will receive a salary of 50 pounds per annum both to be paid from the Police Fund; Lord Bathurst is also of opinion that they should occupy Apartments in the Factory, and should receive two single Rations and Coals. If however, Mr. and Mrs. Fulloon should conduct themselves perfectly to your satisfaction, his Lordship would be disposed to approve of a further allowance of two single Rations which must however depend upon your experience of their good behaviour, and you will be at liberty to discontinue that indulgence if you should see any cause for so doing. I have, etc, R. Wilmot Horton

Elizabeth married Robert Raine on 13 November 1826 at St Phillip's Church, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. At the time of her marriage she was living at Parramatta.[7][8]

Elizabeth married William John Speed (1761 - 1838) on March 12, 1832 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The marriage was reported in the Sydney Gazette on 13 March 1832:

Married
Yesterday, at St. James's Church, by the Rev. RICHARD HILL, WILLIAM JOHN JOHN SPEED, Esq., Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant of the late St. Vincent Rangers, and late an Officer in the Commissariat at Van Diemen's Land, widower, to Mrs. ELIZABETH RAINE, widow.[9]

Elizabeth died on June 12, 1842 in Sydney. Her death was reported in the Sydney Herald on 14 June 1842:

DEATHS
At her residence, O'Connell-street, on the 12th instant, Mrs. Speed, in her 63rd year, after a lingering illness, which she bore with Christian resignation.[1]

Azire-7 and Azire-1 appear to represent the same person because: Ken

I have found and adopted another Elizabeth to merge into your Azire-1. There seems to be a fair bit of tidying up here to do with many people having a shot at this. It must try your patience for the careful work that you have done.

The next one will be two John Fulloons.
