Hoyt Axton is Notable.

Hoyt Axton was an American songwriter and musician who wrote hit songs in the 1960's and 1970's such as "When the Morning Comes", "Never Been to Spain" and "Joy to the World" some becoming top hits by other artists. Axton pursed multiple artistic expressions, had a following as a singer in his own right, acted in television and films, and pencil sketching. Hoyt was a 2007 inductee of the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.


Hoyt Wayne Axton was born on March 25, 1938 in Duncan, Oklahoma to John and Mae (Boren) Axton. His younger brother was John Axton.

Hoyt can be seen on the 1940 US census for Lincoln Twp., Seminole County, Oklahoma at the age of 2, along with his father and mother, who were public school teachers according to the census.

  • His mother Mae (Boren) Axton, cowrote the song "Heartbreak Hotel", a major hit for Elvis Presley. She was also a 2007 Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame inductee.
  • His first cousin David Boren was Oklahoma's 21st Governor and later United States Senator from the state.
