Biography

Jean (or Johannes /Jan) I d'Avesnes, Count of Hainault, 2nd and eldest surviving son and heir, born 1 May 1218. He married 9 October 1246, Aleide (or Aleida, Aleydis) van Holland daughter of Floris (or Florent) IV, Count of Holland, by Machteld (or Mathilde), daughter of Henri I, Duke of Lorraine and Brabant [see Holland 6 for her ancestry]. She was born about 1224. They had seven sons, Jean (or Jan) [II] [Count of Hainault and Holland], Baudouin (or Boudewijn), Floris [Prince of Achaea, lord of Schiedam], Guillaume (or Willem) [Bishop of Cambrai], Bouchard [Bishop of Metz], Guy (or Gwijde) [Bishop of Utrecht], and Jean (or Jan) (died young). Jean I d'Avesnes, Count of Hainault, died 24 Dec. 1257. His widow, Aleide, was Regent of Holland, 1258-63. She died between 1 March and 9 April 1284. He and his wife, Aleide, were buried in the church of the Dominicans in Valenciennes.

  • Datering: 1261 November 18 (in octavo obitus beati Martini); Wilhelmus de Domo Lapidea, verklaart met toestemming van vrouw Aleydis, weduwe van heer Johannes de Avesnes, voogdes van Hollandia én Zeelandia, verkocht te hebben aan heer Lubbertus, abt, en het convent van Hecmunda tienden in Poelgheest, door hem van het graafschap Hollandia in leen gehouden, terwijl hij belooft brieven van bevestiging te zullen leveren van de graaf (wanneer deze meerderjarig zal zijn) en van de bisschop van Traiectum, en stelt als borgen verder heer Simon van Hairlem, Johannes genaamd Persijn, Hugo van Naeldwyck, Theodericus de Poelghiest, ridders H(eidenricus), abt van St. Paulus in Traiectum, voegt hieraan toe het stuk op verzoek van de oorkonder bezegeld te hebben.     Translated: Wilhelmus de Domo Lapidea, declares with permission of lady (vrouwe) Aleydis, widow of lord Johannes de Avesnes, guardian of Hollandia and Zeelandia, to have sold to Mr. Lubbertus, abbot, and the convent of Hecmunda tithes in Poelgheest, by him of the county Hollandia held in loan, while promising to deliver letters of confirmation from the count (when he will be of age) and of the bishop of Traiectum, and as guarantors, he appoints Mr. Simon of Hairlem, Johannes called Persijn, Hugo van Naeldwyck, Theodericus de Poelghiest Knights H (eidenricus), abbot of St. Paul in Traiectum, adds to this the piece was sealed on request of the Charterer.
  • Datering: 1284 Februari 28 (Mo CCo octogesimo tercio feria secunda post Invocavit); Aleydis, weduwe van heer Johannes de Avesnes, verklaart te schenken aan abt en convent van Egmonda een jaarlijkse rente van 20 solidi Hollandse penningen uit hetgeen haar uit de tol te Nyemansvrient wordt uitgekeerd en bepaalt, dat in geval deze uitkering door de graven van Hollandia gelost wordt, tien pond van de afkoopsom in plaats van de rente aan abt en convent geschonken zal worden, alsmede, dat voor de rente bepaalde nader genoemde diensten gehouden zullen moeten worden.     Translated: Aleydis, widow of lord John de Avesnes, declares to donate to abbot and convent of Egmonda an annual interest of 20 solidi Dutch pennies out of what is paid out of the toll at Nyemanvrient and stipulates, that in case this benefit is paid by the counts from Hollandia is released, ten pounds of the lump sum instead of the interest to abbot and convent will be donated, as well as, that for the interest certain specified services will have to be held.
  • 1284 februari 28; Aleid weduwe van heer Jan van Avesnes schenkt aan schepenen van Middelburg ten behoeve van de pitantie van de minderbroeders aldaar een rente van 20 schelling Hollands, jaarlijks op 11 november te ontvangen uit haar inkomsten uit de tol van Niemandsvriend, op voorwaarde dat de minderbroeders haar jaargetijde zullen vieren en met de bepaling dat ingeval haar inkomsten uit die tol door de graaf mochten worden afgekocht, uit de afkoopsom 10 pond Hollands aan schepenen wordt uitgekeerd die daarvoor een voor datzelfde doel aan te wenden rente zullen kopen.     D'avesnes-30 and Avesnes-90 appear to represent the same person because: Obviously meant to be same person. Same mother, and D'avesnes just an empty/messy version. Avesnes-90 has all the correct information which should take priority.

    Should Berthe van Holland, (van_Holland-45) be detached as a wife of Jean d'Avesnes? Berthe van Holland has no profile manager, and has no sources.
