My mother started me on this genealogical journey in the mid-1960's. I was her research assistant, primarily spending hours in the libraries scouring microfilm and microfiche records. Her quest not on her family as they had over the generations genealogists who had done research and published on the Miller family. No, my mother wanted to know about the Auxers as there was at the time very little known.
My mother always drove home the point to me that what others publish in their trees is not genealogy if it was not documented . . . aka days spent in libraries staring at film. I was the document finder for her. With the sharing of trees online today documentation has fallen to the wayside where GEDCOMs are passed around as if they are fact. One of my favorite quotes on this topic . . .
"Most genealogist agree that genealogy without documentation is mythology . A corollary of that statement is, because most published genealogy is without sources, that most published genealogy is mythology."
Do yourself and others a favor, document your tree with facts, not unsourced GEDCOMs.

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.
Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

I've tried the Gedcom import but my tree has 8,000 individuals. I've tried splitting the tree but end up loosing things in the process. I've tried copying the tree on the other programs and then deleting early generations but too did not get what I wanted.
Any ideas.
Thanks so much.
You are looking for info to load your tree. Here is a list of gedcom info; start with uploading vs. importing and GEDCOMpare - you can download a .ged file from Ancestry then upload it to WikITree using the GEDCOMpare process. This allows you to view the profiles one at a time and load only those that are not already on WikITree. Check here: gedcom topics.
A gedcom doesn't "merge" trees, and 8,000 is way too many for one time. Check the page above for splitting the gedcom, and try one family first for GEDCOMpare. This will be the easiest to do. WikiTree doesn't allow direct gedcom imports since it is a one-profile-per-person site.
I hope this helps, and if you need anything else, don't hesitate to get in touch with me.
Take care ~ Sheryl
Take care, and I am here if you need anything. Sheryl
We are so happy you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.
Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.
Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.
