Hyman was born August 10, 1914 in New York City, New York, United States.^[1] He is the son of Nathan Auerbach and Jennie (Thau) Auerbach.^[2]

In 1920, Hyman lived in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with his parents and younger sister, Gertrude.^[3]

In 1930 Hyman's family, consisting of his parents and three younger siblings, lived in Brooklyn, New York, New York, United States.^[4]

Hyman married Dorothy Frances Satt November 15, 1943 in Los Angeles, California, United States. Dorothy's parents were Bernard Satt and Theresa (Yoskowitz) Satt.^[2]

After changing his name to Erich, he was a judge in Los Angeles, California, United States.^[5]
