Biography
Oliver Atwood served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: August 14, 1862 Mustered out: May 20, 1863 Side: USA Regiment(s): 1st Regiment, New York Dragoons
Oliver Atwood was born in 1838, Woodbury, Connecticut, he was discharged due to disability in June of 1863. (Information card has 20 May 1863 [1] as discharge date, and 1 May 1906 as date of death.) The 1900 Census has his year of birth as 1848. He was the son of Burr Buckingham Atwood (1803-1873) Mary Charlotte Hawley (1811-1880).
Enlisted on 14 August 1862 for three years in Coalville, Bennington, New York on the same day as Benjamin F. Atwood. The muster record listed from Fold3 shows that Oliver Atwood was discharged for disability. It does NOT say that he died. The record itself shows dis., not died. [4]
1st Marriage: 9 February 1866, Connecticut, Oliver married Maria Atwood (maiden name is Atwood, her first marriage in 1849 was to Chester A. Atwood).[5] Maria died 5 July 1887, age 66.[6]

2nd Marriage: 1 January 1889, Dalton, Berkshire, Massachusetts, Oliver "L." Atwood, widow, born in Woodbury, Connecticut, married Mary H. Branch. Oliver's parents named as: Burr B. Atwood and Maria Hawley. He was a Stone Mason.[8]Mary died 7 December 1894, age 37, the daughter of Albert Branch and Hannah Minkler.[9]

3rd Marriage: 19 June 1895, Dalton, Berkshire, Massachusetts, Oliver W. Atwood married Mary Smith. Oliver listed his parents as: Burr B. Atwood and Charlotte Hawley.[11] Mary was the daughter of George Smith and Mary Ambler, previous marriage to Everett. Both Oliver and Mary were widowed when they married.
