I have been obsessed with the southern German town: Schwäbisch Hall and have found many ancestors of my 1823 immigrant, Georg Friedrich Koch in that town. I have built a very large database of people who lived in Hall from 1500-1800 and would like to share Info. Also, I am helping others document the Black community of Martin County, FL. I am a white helper, so not related to these families. Some of them came from the Bahamas in the early 1900s.

What are some of the surnames from that town? I have Eisenmenger, Schmidt, Haspel, Rieckert, Roth, Vailler, Lautner, Mauer, Schuetz and few more.

I have several of these: Eisenmenger (my ancestor); Schmidt; Haspel & Roth.

Send me some more details, including names, who they married, etc and I will see what I can share. David

Hi David,

Thanks for joining the Germany Project! I've awarded you a project member badge. When you have a chance, please do the following:

1- Read the main Germany Project Page (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Germany) to familiarize yourself with what we do and what is required of project members.

2- Add GERMANY and/or GERMAN_ROOTS to your list of followed G2G tags, so you can follow what the project is working on (see Help:Tags: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Tags#How_to_follow_tags).

3- We built a Free Space Page with all our different means of communication. You can read about them here (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Germany_Project_Communication)

We look forward to working with you! Please feel free to contact me with any questions any time.

Thanks! Jelena Eckstädt, Germany Project Coordinator

Hi David,

It looks like you are creating profiles through a GEDCOM import. It is important to review these profiles after creation and clean them up, as needed. Sometimes the information ends up all running together and the resulting profiles are hard to read.

You might want to look at the WikiTree Browser Extension. I use it all the time and for me it makes a lot of things so much easier. Features you might want to consider using are the Auto Bio & Bio Check, Auto Gedcom Cleanup. You can find out more at https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:WikiTree_Browser_Extension

Also, I started out using GEDCOM import, but have since discontinued using it. For me it was really nice to make sure I entered everyone, but there was so much cleanup required it seemed easier to just create the profiles from scratch. I'm not sure what the source of your GEDCOM is, but if it's another online tree like Ancestry or FamilySearch, the WikiTree Sourcer extension makes it really easy to copy over the info from the other tree and create a profile on WikiTree. All you have to do is go to the other profile, click "save person data", then go to the add new person screen on WikiTree and click "Set fields from person data for..." Then you add sources and maybe run auto bio and end up with a really nice profile. More information on the WikiTree Sourcer can be found at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:WikiTree_Sourcer

Thanks, Paige

Hi David,

I noticed that you have been working on pre-1700 German profiles. While there was no "Germany" in the pre-1700 era, the Germany project covers people who lived in German-speaking areas that later became part of Prussia and/or modern Germany. They have some good help pages, one of which covers reliable sources (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Germany_Project_Resources#Reliable_Sources). As David noted in your pre-1700 greeting, primary, or other reliable sources are required for pre-1700 profiles, and you should always have at least one reliable source available at the time of profile creation.

Please note that something like "Reitz Genealogy cards by Häfner" is similar to user-generated trees, and would not be considered reliable. Also, published books, articles and blogs that do not have sources listed are not considered reliable. If you do have a book that lists reliable sources, then the best practice would be to consult and cite the sources that they mention. If this is not possible, then provide a complete source citation for the book, noting the primary source used by the author of the book. Simply listing a title of a book is not sufficient. The sources help page has more information on how and why to cite complete sources: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources You don't need to worry too much about the format of the citation, but make sure you include all the info.

This might see complicated at first, but once you get going it becomes much easier to fully cite sources on subsequent profiles. And future researchers and other family members will thank you! If you need any help, the G2G forum is a good place to ask. You can get there from the help menu in the upper right corner of the screen. If you tag your post with the keyword Germany you will probably get a response from someone knowledgable in German research (Germany project members are a friendly bunch!)

Thanks,

Paige

Thank you Paige,

I have access to the Württemberg Taufen & Heirat database on Ancestry.com so I will try harder to cite a baptism or marriage as a key reference.

Hi David,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles!

It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

PS: I noticed that you added the BLACK tag. That will get you a listing of those contributions dealing with the BLACK surname. You said you are helping others document the Black community. You will probably be interested in following the BLACK_HERITAGE tag for those contributions dealing with the Black community. You can find out more information on WikiTree for the Black community under the US Black Heritage Project page.

Hi David!

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

Thank you also for adding a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM does not automatically populate your tree. It generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through, either accepting or rejecting all suggested matches. Once that has been done, you should see [add] buttons for each of the remaining names.

The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.

For those using Chrome, Opera or Firefox browsers, there is a tool that can help with the formatting of profiles which have been created through GEDCOM, so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

I hope this helps! If you have any questions or problems, let me know.

Have fun
