Biography

Charles was born in the workhouse at Renfrew Road, the birth being registered by the warden. His mother was an unemployed domestic servant. Mother and child were discharged the same day, but Charles was readmitted with his mother and he remained there for several days although his mother was discharged before him. The man Charles came to consider his father was run over in the street and died. It is not known if this was his real father or step father. All that is known about him is that he was a porter in one of the markets in London and was a boxer, perhaps a prize fighter. At one point Charles was sent away to the West Country, he thinks to a school but we think it may have been a workhouse. He hated it and was brought home. It was most likely that this was after his 'father's' death. His mother went to pieces and as soon as he could Charles left home to work and had no more contact with his mother. During WWII Charles was in Royal Navy on minesweepers and also stationed in S. Africa. After the war he continued his association with the navy by running a sea cadet group in Maidstone, rising to Area Commander.
