Back in the late 1800's, at NJ and PA, on the Delaware, our Atens KNEW who their ancestors were, because there were interested persons of our Atens even then, who knew their own histories and passed them to their children. They KNEW Thomas was the father of their grandfather, Adriaen, married to Jacobje Middagh.[5]

Adriaen Aten was baptized on 4 September 1695 at the Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York; "Thomas Aten, Elsje Schilman; Adriaen; (witnesses) Adriaen Aten and his wife, Elisabeth Thomas."[6][7] He was the son of Thomas Aten and Elsje Schilman.[6][7]

Adriaen Aten married Jacobje Middagh, daughter of Dirck Aertse Middagh and Cataline Pieterse Van Nest, circa 1717 at Somerset County, New Jersey.[5] Adriaen Aten removed to Readington circa 1721 at Somerset County, New Jersey.[7] He and Jacobje Middagh sponsored the baptism of Cathelyntje Lowe on 3 March 1723 at the North Branch Reformed Church, Readington, Somerset County, New Jersey.[8][9] Adriaen Aten witnessed the baptism of Cathelyntje Low on 3 March 1723 at Readington, Somerset County, New Jersey; Sponsors: Adriaen Aten and wife Jacobje Middagh.[8] Adriaen Aten witnessed the baptism of Blandina Middagh, daughter of Cornelius and Ike on 8 November 1724 at the North Branch Reformed Church, Readington, Somerset County, New Jersey.[9] He witnessed the baptism of Blandina Middagh on 8 November 1724 at the North Branch Reformed Church, Readington, Somerset County, New Jersey.[9] Adriaen Aten had descendants named for him, namely: Adriaen Schamp. Adriaen Aten left a will on 8 December 1757; His will names Jacobje Middagh, his wife, and her brother Pieter, executors.[7] He died on 11 December 1757 at age 62 years, 3 months and 7 days.[10] His estate was probated on 28 February 1758.[7]

Aten-183 and Aten-31 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates, same parents. Since I created Aten-183, this was the person it was supposed to be.

The following message was sent to the New Netherland Settlers Project as a private message by Maria Hopper. It is more properly posted here, on the profile it discusses:

He was not the Adrian son of Thomas Aten and Elsje Schilman bap 4 Sep 1695 in Jamaica, NY, as published in the New York Genealogical and Biographic Record Vol .37 p.26, as an old Bible records discovered in Pennsylvania proves he was the son of Hendrick Aten and Maria De Mott. In addition, he named his second son Henry and third daughter Mary, in honor of his parents, and did not name children Thomas or Elsie. [Notes on the Aten (Auten) Family p.239]

Aten-255 and Aten-31 appear to represent the same person because: There are enough similarities here -- including a duplicate son -- that these need to be considered as possible matches. There are definitely discrepancies in locations, and these discrepancies can always be noted in a "Research Notes" section in the Biography.

In other words, if it's clear that they are the same person, but there are questions about any of their vital statistics, you can still merge them and make notes about items that need further research.

Thanks!
