Thos, C. Atcheson. Died, suddenly, in this city, Thursday evening, Dec. 19th, of apoplexy, THOMAS C. ATCHESON, aged 63 years. Mr. Atcheson came to Ogdensburg from Ireland in 1834 and went to work for the late S. C. Field in ,a hat and cap store. Possessed of a highly social and genial disposition, and a great degree of mirthfulness, he soon formed acquaintances and associations which have lasted a lifetime and made him a central figure wherever he happened to be. For many years he carried on the hat and cap business in this city. In 1862 he volunteered in the Union army and served in the 106th N. Y. V. till the close of the war. Possessed of an unusual degreq of activity, and a natural inclination for politics, he was always an active member of the party to which he gave his adhesion. First a Whig and then a Republican, he followed the fortunes of those parties, rendering the best service in his power. To personal friends he was attached with unwavering loyalty, and when he enlisted in their behalf he left nothing undone to secure success. Working for friends brought him into acquaintance with all the prominent politicians in the county, and made him a man of considerable notoriety. His ability to tell a good story and powers of repartee drew around him the crowd both in social and convivial circles, and many will regret to hear of his death who met him but once. During his long residence here he filled many minor offices, and at the time of his death was Deputy U. S. Marshal, and Under Sheriff of St. Lawrence county. He complained Wednesday evening of feeling slightly unwell, and remained at home during the day Thursday. In the evening about eight o'clock some friends who had been in to see him, left. A few moments later he said he felt a strange sensation, and died almost instantly.[8]
