Biography

Elsie was born in Tipton, Staffordshire in 1901. She was the daughter of Joseph Aston and Clara Plant. As a teenager she attended Dudley Girls' High School, later becoming an elementary school teacher. In 1926 she married John Gilchrist Smith in Tipton. In 1939 the couple had at least two children and lived in Nelson, Lancashire. In later life, probably after retirement, they moved to Scarborough, Yorkshire, very close to Elsie's older sister Gertrude Parr Aston. Elsie was widowed in 1988 and passed away in Scarborough in 1993.
