William was born in 1898. Son of John George and Alice Maude Aspland, of Soham, Cambs.

In the 1901 census Bertie (age 3) lived with his parents and siblings in Soham, Cambridgeshire, England.[1]

In 1911, Bert (age 13), was a land worker, whilst living with his parents in Soham, Cambridgeshire, England.[2]

William joined the Royal Navy on 14th October 1913. His service number was J27942.[3]

As an Able Seaman, he served aboard H.M.S. "Mary Rose." and HMS Diligence in the Royal Navy
