Welcome to WikiTree and DNA.

My name is John Kingman. I am a Coordinator with the WikiTree DNA Project.

Since you have started following a DNA tag, you may be interested in how you can use DNA test matches with your relatives to strengthen your genealogy on WikiTree. You will find the answers in the DNA Help pages, of which the DNA Help category page shows all the DNA help that is available, and the How to Get Started with DNA page is highlighted. Also the DNA Features page can show you various ways that DNA tests can work with your genealogy. For a detailed guide to connecting DNA test results to WikiTree profiles via GEDmatch, look here.

You may see some relatives show up in your list of "DNA Connections" on your profile if they have added a DNA test to their profile. These DNA Connections are possible DNA test matches, they are not sufficient for marking parental relationships as "confirmed with DNA" without providing a DNA Confirmation source citation providing details of an acceptable DNA match. You may find that you have acceptable matches with some of them. There is more information about DNA Connections on the DNA Test Connections page.

When you are ready to start documenting that your genealogy sources are confirmed by DNA test matches, be sure to follow the guidance at the Confirmed with DNA help page. Note that every time you mark a child's relationship to their parent as Confirmed with DNA you must add a source citation to the =Sources= section of that child's profile that explains how you made the DNA-confirmed determination for their parent.

I strongly recommend using WikiTree’s DNA Confirmation Citation Maker app for creating and/or validating your DNA confirmation source citations. Note that a profile must have source citations for both genealogy and the necessary DNA test matching information when it is marked "confirmed with DNA".

If you have questions or need assistance, feel free to ask on the G2G Forum using the Tag "DNA" and/or "DNA_Confirmation". There are lots of folks willing to help.

Happy WikiTree-ing!

I can't get my Ancestry DNA to upload. I really wanted to see who I connect with on more levels than just my Ancestry.com tree. It said file too large, and every site I have tried has been the same!

Hi Tephanie!

Here is a link to Ancestry's instruction on downloading a GEDCOM from Ancestry. It takes some time to download a GEDCOM. Once it has been downloaded, you can then upload it on WikiTree. It will take some time to upload and you will get a message emailed to you when it is ready. The GEDCOM will not automatically populate your tree. It generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through, either accepting or rejecting, suggested matches. This link is very helpful when working through your report GEDCOMpare Process

This is time-consuming, though can be worth it in the end. Unlike other sites, where there are many trees, WikiTree is a single tree, so checking before uploading will save you the effort of having to merge duplicate profiles later. This process allows you to look for existing profiles that can save you a lot of time later.

Once you have completed the match/reject review in the GEDCOMpare process, an Add button will appear beside the remaining records in your GEDCOM. That Add button will let you create new profiles without having to type everything. It is still a one by one process because the data needs to be reviewed for completeness and sources.

If you have more than 5,000 names, you will need to split your tree.splitting a tree

If your Ancestry tree is more than 5,000 people, you have to download your tree as a GEDCOM, then upload it to Ancestry as a duplicate tree, or upload it to a desktop program, then remove records until you have less than 5,000 names. You then download this as a GEDCOM and then you can upload it on WikiTree. Then you do the same with the remaining names.

You may want to start with a smaller GEDCOM. There is a good chance that your ancestor's profiles already exist on WikiTree. You will only need to add your closest ancestors until you can connect to the profiles that already exist. This will save you some time.

I hope this helps, any problems please let me know

Take care
