DANIEL BOONE ASHCRAFT 1761-1846
WAR of 1812
Daniel Boone Ashcraft was born in 1761 at Sleepy Creek, Berkley County West Virginia to Captain Ichabod Ashcraft 1737-1804 and his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Coleman 1737-1821.
Elizabeth and Capt Ichabod Ashcraft were the Parents of 10 children:
Daniel Ashcraft married Elizabeth "Catharine Anne Shuman, a neighbor girl, of German descent in 1790 in Sleepy Creek. They lived in the neighborhood until Spring of 1807 when they started down the Monongahela in a flat boat headed for Zanesville. Daniel Ashcraft from PA came to Pike Township and entered the 1st quarter of land taken up in that Township. Daniel was a Blacksmith, Cooper, & owned a Tannery. He provided lodging, entertainment, and a meal at his house to strangers. Meal: 12 1/2 cents - Lodging 6 1/4 cents.
Children of Daniel and Catherine Ashcraft:
Daniel Ashcraft's wife Catherine died in 1824, the result of a home accident. Her dress caught fire and she died of injuries from the burns. Catherine was the first person buried in the little family cemetery on top of the hill above the old Ashcraft homestead.
After Catherine's death in 1824, Daniel Ashcraft married a widow with two children - Mary Seward Goodwin. They were married on the 29th of November 1825 in Coshocton County, Ohio, USA.
On March 10, 1837, Mary Seward Goodwin Ashcraft filed an article of agreement (divorce) for half of the marital assets. After the settlement, Mary Ashcraft went with her son, James to live in Sullivan, Indiana, USA.
In a letter from Harvey Ashcraft in the 1960's, he wrote his memories of his great-great Grandpa: Daniel & Elizabeth Ashcraft moved here from Cheat River section of PA and took up a large section of ground or all of what is known as ASHCRAFT RIDGE. Most handed down generation to generation as they were good farmers and livestock handlers and especially sheep.
Daniel Ashcraft died at the age of 85 and is buried at Broomstick Cemetery in Coshocton County, Ohio.
Bio and research by 5th Great Granddaughter, Carole Anne Brown-44556 Whittemore on the 18th of March 2016.
