Biography

Stillman F. Ash was born at Gouldsboro, Maine, about 1852, the son of Robert Ash and Huldah W. Gordon; ^{[1] [2]} died, probably at Steuben, before 12 Oct 1877, when his daughter, Abigail, was born (see research notes). ^[3]

He married at Steuben, Maine, 22 Dec 1876, Julia A. Hodgkins ^[4] as her first of three husbands (see Research Notes). Following his death, she married (2) intentions at Milbridge, 16 Apr 1878, George William Kelley; ^[5] married (3) at Milbridge, 16 Sep 1897, Everett H. Jones. ^[6]

Julia Hodgkins was a daughter of Agreen and Elvira (Wakefield) Hodgkins. She married #1 in 1876 Stillman Ash. They had a daughter named Abigail, born in October 1878. Ash died before the baby was born, however. Julia married #2 April 4, 1878, George William Kelley. George is my great-grandfather. Julia and George had four children, born in Milbridge: George W, born 1880; Arthur (my grandfather) born in 1886; Elvira, born in 1884 and Walter, born in 1890. George adopted the daughter, Abigail, and she changed her name to Kelley. George Kelley died in 1892 and Julia married #3, Everett Jones. I have a copy of the marriage intentions. Julia and Everett had two daughters:

(1) Lillian, born 1897 and died 1988. She married in 1912 Curtis Robinson of Milbridge (1871-1964). They had eight children:

(2) Lucretia, born in Milbridge 8 Oct. 1900 and d. San Pedro CA 6 jan 1972. married Milbridge 30 July 1925 Vandoll V. "Vaughn" Grant of Cherryfield, b. 27 Oct 1900 and d. Augusta 5 Oct 1974.

I have discovered other relatives and am now trying to secure photographs of some of these people. If I'm successful, I'd be glad to share materials. Don't have a picture of Julia yet, but who knows? I know she is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Milbridge. My own father was her grandson, but his mother died in 1918 and my grandfather brought him away from 'downeast' where they lived, and he (my dad) did not remember his grandmother. He was 85 when he passed away this past spring, but did not have any photos.
