Biography

Violet Mae was the daughter of William DeCalb Arnold and Mary Etta Hose. She was born August 29, 1933, in Grafton, Taylor Co., W.Va.[1] She had six brothers, William Edward, William Junior, Claude Victor, Lewis Edward, Donald Jackson, Odis Darl, and three sisters, Norma Lee, Leona Belle, and Bonnie Jean.

Violet married James Franklin Potts on November 17, 1956, in Cleveland, Ohio. [2] They had four children, Wanda L., Barbara E., James M., and Helen M. Violet and James separated and divorced three years before her death.[3]

On February 4, 1969, around 7 a.m, Violet's nightgown caught fire after standing too close to a kerosene heater. This accident resulted in severe burns on 80% of her body. Violet died February 23, 1969, at 4:45 a.m, at WVU Hospital. She was just 35 years old.[4]

Her funeral was held at Bartlett Funeral Home in Grafton, W.Va. She was then buried in Woodsdale Memorial Park on February 25, 1969.[5]
