Biography

When Claude registered for the World War I draft, he was 30 years old. He gives his birth year as 1886 rather than 1887, which is listed on his birth record.[1] He is living in Buffalo, Johnson County, Wyoming and working as a "bridge carpenter." He states that he is ineligible for the draft because of heart problems. He also states that he is single and has served for 14 months in the "U.S. Regular Army" as a private in the infantry. He is tall and of medium build with brown eyes and hair.[2]
At the time of the 1930 Census, Claude is living in Bouse, Yuma County, Arizona and working in a copper mine. He indicates that he is married, but it appears that he is probably living among the other copper mine workers. It is not uncommon for mine workers to spend a period of time living away from their permanent residences.[3]
Claud, Annie and their son Robert are living in Maricopa County, Arizona in 1940. There is a 44-year-old lodger named Luther O. Burns also listed in the household.[4]
On 27 Apr 1942, Claude registered for the World War II draft in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. He lists his wife Annie as his next of kin.[5]
It appears that Claude died in Washington state on 4 Oct 1970.[6] He is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Centralia, Washington. There is a grave marker for Annie M. Arney (rather than the "L" that is shown on their marriage record), as well. The birth date on her marker matches that from census records.

Research Notes

  • I have been unable to find Claude in the 1910 or 1920 US Census. Both censuses list his parents in North Dakota, but he is not listed with them. -- Fiscus-32 16:57, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
