Edward Ferdinand Arn (1906-1998) was a prominent American lawyer and politician, renowned for his tenure as the 32nd governor of Kansas from 1951 to 1955. Affiliated with the Republican Party, Arn had previously held the esteemed position of the 31st attorney general of Kansas from 1947 to 1949. Notably, he was the inaugural governor of Kansas to have been born in the 20th century.[1]
Arn was raised in Kansas City, Kansas, and pursued his education at Kansas City Junior College, the University of Kansas, and the Kansas City School of Law.[2] He entered into matrimony twice, first with Marcella Ruth Tillmans on October 28, 1933, and later with Catherine Phillipi Ross. He was blessed with two offspring.
Arn practiced law in Wichita, Kansas, until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a lieutenant aboard an aircraft carrier that participated in the battle of Iwo Jima.
Upon his return to his legal profession, Arn became actively involved in local politics and assumed the role of Chairman of the Wyandotte County Republicans. From 1947 to 1949, he served as the Attorney General of Kansas, and subsequently served as a justice of the Kansas Supreme Court from 1949 to 1951.[3]
Arn's political career reached its pinnacle when he secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination and was elected as the Governor of Kansas in 1950. He was re-elected in 1952 and held office from 1951 to 1955, making him the first Governor of Kansas to be born in the 20th century.[4] During his tenure, significant accomplishments included the establishment of the Kansas Turnpike Authority, enhancements to workman's compensation benefits, the formation of the Kansas Veteran's Commission, the organization of a state department of Administration, and the effective management of the destructive floods that occurred in 1951.
On January 10, 1955, Arn concluded his term as Governor and returned to Wichita to resume his legal practice. In 1960, he served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention, and in 1962, he made an unsuccessful bid for the United States Senate.
Arn passed away at a medical facility located in Wichita, Kansas, on January 22, 1998,[5] and was laid to rest at the Old Mission Chapel Mausoleum in Wichita.
