(1890). SEPARATION. James Aitcheson was charged by his wife, Sarah Susannah Aitcheson, with having, on the 7th inst., committed an aggravated assault upon her, by beating her on the sides of the head with his fists. The defendant pleaded guilty. The complainant, in reply to the Bench, stated that her husband had been in the habit of constantly beating and kicking her, and of turning her out of the house at night, since their marriage. Mr. Haynes, who appeared for the complainant, asked his Worship to grant an order of separation, and to direct the defendant to pay his wife, who had nine children, £1 per week. After some discussion, Mr. Cowan said he was bound, under the local statute, to sentence Aitcheson to three months, hard labour ; he granted the defendant a separation order ; and made an order that the defendant should pay his wife £1 per week for the future, payment to commence upon his discharge from gaol.
