Biography

Harriet (Armitage) Meyer was a New Jerseyan.

Harriet Hitchings Armitage (1885-198) was born on the 17th March 1885 in Newark, New Jersey. ^[1] She was the youngest daughter of Charles Armitage and Harriet Hitchings and she was christened on 18 Oct 1885 at St John's church, Newark ^[1] The family lived in the 8th ward of Newark for some years, ^{[2] [3]} but by 1900, they had moved to Plymouth Street in Montclair ^[4] where it was likely Harriet met her future husband.

She married Andrew Morison on 31 May 1905 St Luke's Episcopal Church, Montclair. ^[5]

By 1910, the couple were living in Glen Ridge, New Jersey when Andrew was described as a bank broker and they then had 2 sons, ^[6] but they only remained there a short while and by 1912, they had moved back to Montclair ^[7] where they lived on North Mountain Avenue. ^[8] The family moved to Highland Avenue before 1918 ^{[9] [10]}

Andrew died on 13 Nov 1928 in Montclair ^[11] and was buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Valley Road, Montclair. ^[12]
In 1930, Harriet was living with her 2 sons on Roosevelt Place in Montclair. ^[13]

She remarried in 1936 to a widower Francis Meyer who lived on the same street in Montclair. ^[14] and she moved into his house on Highland Avenue. They travelled to Europe in 1937 ^[15] and Bahamas in 1938. ^[16] They were living on Highland Avenue in 1940 but the census data on that page is mostly missing and what is recorded has huge errors in their ages. ^[17]

They made a return trip to the Bahamas in 1949 ^[18] but Francis died the following year. In the 1950 census Harriet was living alone with 2 servants on Highland Avenue. ^[19]

Harriet lived until 21 May 1958 when she died in Montclair (although the death index indicates neighbouring Glen Ridge). ^[20]
