Gilbert Edward Archey was born at York, England, on 9 August 1890. His parents were Thomas Archey and Sarah (Triffitt) Archey.
Arrived with his parents and family in New Zealand in 1892. Thomas and Sarah Archey emigrated to New Zealand with their young children Helen, Gilbert and Norah in 1893, aboard the ship Ruahine. [1]
He graduated from Canterbury University College, Christchurch, M.A. D.Sc. about 1914 and became Assistant Curator of the Canterbury Museum, later joining the Auckland Institute and Museum in 1924.
During the First World War he served in the New Zealand Field Artillery, promoted to Captain before the end of the war.
During the Second World War he was attached to the British Military Administration in Malaya with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
He served on the New Zealand University Grants Committee and was President of the Council of the Royal Society of New Zealand, 1941-1942.
He was a member of the Maori Purposes Fund Board, the Waitangi National Trust Board, the Auckland branch of the Royal Society, and the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council.
Gilbert Archey was awarded an O.B.E. in 1919 and knighted in 1963.
He wrote for academic journals such as South Sea Folk (1937 and 1949) and wrote Sculpture and Design, an Outline of Maori Art pub:1955 and The Moa, a Study of the Dinornithiformes pub:1941.
