Dr. Branch T. Archer received a medical degree in 1808 from the University of Pennsylvania. He practiced medicine in Virginia. Dr. Archer represented Powhattan County in the General Assembly of Virginia during the session of 1819-1820[1]
Dr. Archer went to Texas and became an advocate for Texas Independence from Mexico. He was elected president of the Consultation of 1835. He served in the First Congress of the new republic of Texas. He was Speaker of the House of Representatives during the second session. Dr. Archer served as Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas in 1840-1841.[2][3]
He remained an active leader in Texas politics until his death on September 22, 1856. Death: Sep. 22, 1856, Brazoria County, Texas, USA
He is buried at Eagle Island Plantation in Brazoria County. Archer County was formed in1858 and named in his honor. [4][5]
