Biography

Augustus Azariah Archer was born March 14, 1829 in Green Turtle Key, Abaco, Bahamas. Augustus was the son of Benjamin Archer and Charlotte Pyfrom.[1]

Augustus Archer's parents, Benjamin and Charlotte Archer, moved to Key West, Monroe, Florida with their first five children (including Augustus) in 1839. They had 7 more children who were born in Key West.

Augustus A. Archer married Caroline Sawyer September 6, 1850 in Key West, Monroe, Florida.[2] They had children in Key West.

Augustus and Caroline Archer were among the first to settle in the area which became known as Seminole, Florida, north of Tampa bay. They arrived about 1860, before the census, and some of their children were born there. Seminole was in Hillsborough county until 1912 when Pinellas county was formed. Augustus was the captain of his own ship, and probably sailed often between Key West and Seminole. Later he became a fruit grower.

Augustus Archer appeared at age 31 in the 1860 US census in Tampa (post office), HIllsborough, Florida. His birthplace was the Bahamas, occupation-Seaman. Also in the household were Caroline (28, Bahamas), Sarah (13, Bahamas, Caroline's niece), William (8, Florida), Oliver (6, Florida), Ellen (4, Florida) and Percival (5/12, Florida). [3]

When the 1870 Census was taken in Hillsborough County, Florida, Augustus (age 41, born in Nassau) was identified as a farmer with real estate valued at $200 and personal property valued at $225. Living with him were Carolina (38, Nassau), William A (18), Oliver E (15), Ella C (13), Malcolm (10), Charles W (8), Charlotte (4), and Inez R (2). All the children were born in Florida.[4]

August Archer enlisted in the Confederate Army at Tampa, Florida in Company K, Florida 7th Infantry Regiment on 14 May 1862. He mustered out 1 Sept 1862. [5]

August Archer was appointed trustee of one of the first schools in Seminole in 1879, which was named Long Bayou School. He was responsible for renaming it "Seminole School" around 1890. This school is now Seminole Elementary School.

Three of Augustus Archer's sons, Oliver, William and Charles, married 3 Brown sisters, Sarah (Sally), Hattie, and Della Brown. The Brown family were neighbors and the children grew up together. [6]

A. A. Archer appeared at age 56 in the 1885 Florida State census in Hillsborough, Florida. Also in the household were his wife Caroline, 53, and daughter Charlotte, 19. Almost all of his children appeared on the same 2 pages of the census as Augustus and Caroline, living nearby. Most were married with children of their own. [7]

In 1886, the Seminole Post Office was created. Augustus Archer was the postmaster.[8]

"Augus" Archer appeared at age 71 in the 1900 US census in Hillsborough County, Florida. He was born March 1829 in the Bahamas, father born in England (this is different from where most believe he was born), mother born Bahamas, occupation-Fruit Grower.
With him was Caroline E Archer, 68, born March 1832 in the Bahamas, father-Bahamas, mother-Bahamas. She was the mother of 7 with 6 living, married 50 years. [9]

Augustus Archer passed away Dec 18, 1904 and was buried in the Seminole Cemetery in Seminole, Pinellas, Florida[10]
