Alexander Dundas Young Arbuthnot was born at Forton in Hampshire, son of Robert Arbuthnot and his wife, Cordelia Murray in 1789.[1] He was baptised at Holy Trinity church, in the fortified town of Gosport, on the 7th of March 1789. [2]

He served as a midshipman on board Mars at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. [1]
At The British Ambassador's House in Paris on the 25th of May 1826 he married Catherine Maria Eustace, [3] daughter of Charles Eustace and his wife, Cassandra Stannard.
He was knighted at St James's Palace on the 25th of June 1859. [4]
Alexander died at Shenton Hall in Leicestershire on the 8th of May 1871.
Rear Admiral. Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to George IV and Queen Victoria. Knight Cmdr of the Spanish Orders of Charles III and St Fernando, Knight Cmdr of the Russian St George (a much esteemed gallantry award). Turkish gold medal and Order of Medjidie (1842). Bailiff, Order of St John (1861).
