Roscoe was an American silent film actor, physical comedian, who was one of the highest paid and most popular actors of the 1910s. He began his career as a singer, but found that comedy was more lucrative. [1] Even though he was a large man, weighing around 300 lbs., he was surprising strong and agile and thus could perform physical comedy which was very popular at the time. [1] He began as one of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keystone_Cops Keystone Cops', but eventually broke out on his own. [1] He mentored Charlie Chaplin and is credited with discovering Buster Keaton and Bob Hope. [1] Unfortunately, his success was overshadowed with Hollywood Scandal when he was accused and tried for the murder of Virginia Rappé.
The young actress was discovered, seriously ill, in his hotel room on 5 September 1921. She was examined by the hotel doctor and deemed to be extremely intoxicated. [1] She was administered morphine to quiet her and moved to another room. She died a few days later.
"When the million-dollar movie comedian faced a manslaughter charge, the jury was indeed scandalized—at how his reputation had been trashed... Acquittal is not enough for Roscoe Arbuckle. We feel that a great injustice has been done to him… there was not the slightest proof adduced to connect him in any way with the commission of a crime. He was manly throughout the case and told a straight forward story which we all believe. We wish him success and hope that the American people will take the judgment of fourteen men and women that Roscoe Arbuckle is entirely innocent and free from all blame.
One week later, Will Hays, whom the motion picture industry hired as a censor to restore its image, banned Fatty Arbuckle from appearing on screen. Hays would change his mind eight months later, but the damage was done. Arbuckle changed his name to William Goodrich (Will B. Good) and worked behind the scenes, directing films for friends who remained loyal to him and barely earning a living in the only business he knew. A little more than ten years later, on June 29, 1933, he had a heart attack and died in his hotel room..." [2]
"Along with Rappé came 'Bambina' Maude Delmont, against whom California police had filed at least 50 counts of extortion, bigamy, fraud and racketeering. Delmont was also known as a 'professional co-respondent,' for blackmailers... Virginia Rappé died of peritonitis four days later, after a lengthy delay by Delmont -- against medical advice -- to get her to a hospital. But Maude Delmont claimed a very different reason for Virginia's death: She went to the San Francisco Police, and filed charges that Roscoe Arbuckle had raped and caused the death of Rappé." [3]
