Biography

Antonio Aquilini has Italian Roots.

According to information found on Ancestry, Tony was the son of Albino Aquilini and Angela Barbante. He was born in Antrodoco, Italy. Around 1909 he married Agata Ciuffa and their first child was born in 1910.

In the spring of 1911, Tony and his brother-in-law Saverio Ciuffa travelled to Vancouver [1] His wife followed in 1912. However, a few years later when there were several more children, the family returned home to Italy. Unfortunately three young daughters died during this interlude before the family once again made the journey back to Canada during October 1920.[2] They were headed to Saverio's residence at 429 - 3rd Avenue N.E., Calgary.[3] However, they soon moved to Nordegg where two more daughters were born. Likely Tony worked at the coal mine which was located there.[4]

By 1926 the family had returned to Calgary and at first lived at 647 McDougall Rd which is located in the neighborhood of Bridgeland-Riverside. [5] There were other newcomers from Antrodoco living in their community. Then the family moved up the hill to 429 - 6A St. N.E. where they lived for many years.

Like many of his compatriots, Tony managed to get on with the City of Calgary waterworks department, finally retiring in 1951. A few years later his wife died in 1956, then his son Mario in 1963. Tony spent his latter years at the Bow Valley Lodges before he died in 1970. He is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery.
