Biography

Francis Apter was born in County Durham, England.

Francis Reginald Apter (1890-1964) was born on the 25th February 1890 in Denton near Darlington, Durham. ^{[1] [2]} He was the son of Rev. William Apter the incumbent of the local parish and his wife Amelia Hatch. ^[1]

He grew up in the vicarage in Denton ^{[3] [4]} before setting off on his across the Atlantic. He left England via Liverpool aboard the "Virginian" on the 5th March 1909 ^[5] arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia on the 12th March 1909 stating his intention to farm. ^[6]

Francis Apter migrated from England to USA.

He only remained in Canada about 18 months latterly in Winnipeg before crossing into the United States at St Albans, Vermont in November 1910. ^{[7] [8]}

He headed to California and started the process of becoming a naturalised citizen. ^[9]
He settled in San Francisco where he married 6 years later to Millicent Amy Waterhouse on the 30th November 1916. At that time he lived on Eddy Street and was employed as a department manager. ^[10]

Living

For the first few years they lived on Dodge Place near to Eddy Street ^{[11] [12]} and during the latter part of WW1 he served in the 13th Division Headquarters Troop. ^{[2] [13] [14]}

He worked as a salesman and after a couple of years at Dodge Place they moved to Page Street where they lived with Amelia's father, Henry. ^{[15] [16]} They were only there 2 years before moving to Sanchez Street, San Francisco. ^[17] It was here in 1923 they started their family with Millicent, ^[18] followed 2 years later by a son.
In the 1930 census Francis was shown as a salesman in the auto parts industry, ^{[19] [20]} and they remained there about 30 years ^{[21] [22] [23]}

It was sometime in the 1950s that they moved to San Mateo and it was there Millicent died in 1961.

Francis was living on Polhemus Road, San Mateo in 1964 when he was hospitalised. He died on the 6th April 1964 at the General Hospital in San Mateo. ^{[24] [25] [26]}

He was cremated before being inurned at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno. ^{[13] [14] [24]}
