Henry was born about 1840 October sixteenth in Owen County, Indiana, to Samuel Applegate and his wife Nancy Hancock, who were married 1840 January sixteenth in Owen County, Indiana, by Isaac Skelton M.G. [citation needed]
His brother is Henderson.
Henry was a farmer (1850, 1880).
Henry served as a private to corporal in Company I of the 8th Regiment of Iowa Infantry during the War of the Rebellion [1]
He enlisted 1861 August tenth for three yearsand mustered in September twelfth as a private in Company I of the 8th Iowa Infantry. He re-enlisted 1864 January first in Pocahontus, Tennessee, and was promoted February eleventh to first corporal. He was taken prisoner 1864 August twenty-first by Forest's cavalry and sent to Cahaba, Alabama where he was a prisoner of war for 6 weeks. Henry mustered out 1866 April twentieth in Selma, Alabama.
Henry was married 1860 February twelfth in Wayne County, Iowa, to Mary Jane Chapman [2].
