Benjamin Appel was born on 24 Mar 1869 in Mansbach, son of Abraham Appel (1840–1901) and Sophie Löwentritt (~1835–1922).^[1]

Benjamin emigrated together with his brother Isaac from Bremen, Germany to New York on the ship "Lahn" arriving in New York on 31 Aug 1888.^[2] He lived in New York for two years beginning in 1888 and then in Las Vegas, New Mexico for 30 years. He became a naturalized citizen on 1 Nov 1900. In 1921 he applied for a passport. He stated that he was going to visit his mother in Germany. On 17 Feb 1921, he traveled to Germany on the ship "Ryndam".^[3]

Benjamin must have visited Germany before then, however, because he married Röschen Stern in Frankfurt am Main on 25 May 1906. The marriage certificate lists his residence as Las Vegas, New Mexico.^[4]

Benjamin died on 3 Mar 1942 in Los Angeles, California, aged 72 and was buried at Peace Memorial Park, East Los Angeles, California.^[7]
