Biography

"VINCENTIUS ANTONIDES (alias Wickaut), b. 1670; settled Bergen and Friesland in Holland, 1700-1705; arrived America, 1 Jan. 1704/5; settled Freehold (Monmouth) NJ, Holmdel (Monmouth) NJ, and Marlborough (Monmouth) NJ., all 1705-1705; Brooklyn, Bushwick, Flatbush, Flatlands, Gravesend, Jamaica, and New Utrecht, on Long Island, NY, 1705-1744; Staten Island, NY, at Richmond and Port Richmond, 1714-1744; Dutch Ref.; d. NY, 18 July 1744."[1]

Rev. Vincentius Antonides married Tiedte Clases (also called Titje Klasses) at Franeker, Friesland, Netherlands, on 30 December 1690. Their first two children were born at Franeker. Later children were baptized at Bergum in the Netherlands,[2] where Vincentius was pastor of the Reformed Church. [3]

In 1705 Vincentius Antonides was called by the Classis of Amsterdam to serve the churches in "Breukelen, Midvoort, and Amersfoort in New Netherland," and the family moved to the Province of New York.[3]

There was a daughter Berbera Antonides Wichaut, Birth: ABT 1700 in Bargam in Friesland who married 2 NOV 1719 in Reformed Dutch Church of Flatbush to Dirck Michaels Van Vechten aka Vegte. The marriage is in Brooklyn and Flatbush Book 72, and it indicates she was the daughter of Domine.[12]

Berbera's daughter is the Margareta mentioned in Vincentius' will below. Margrietje Van Vechten b: before 2 Oct 1720, Marriage Jacobus aka John VanderSpiegel b: in New York; Married: 14 Jan 1739/40 in New Jersey,

Page 283.--In the name of God, Amen, November 6, 1743. I, VINCENTIUS ANTONIDES, minister of the Gospel at Flatbush, being in good health. I leave to my eldest son Johanes, for his birth right, a negro boy, "John," aged ten years, and all the books in which I have written this in Dutch, "Dit book behoort tot myn zoon Johanes Antonides." Also all my writing library, both Latin and Dutch, and all the rest to my heirs, my son Johanes, my daughter Johana, wife of Cornelius Rapalye, and my grand-daughter Margareta, wife of Jacobus Vanderspiegel. I make my son Johanes, and my friends Jacobus Goelet and Peter Strycher, executors. Witnesses, James Remsen, Engelbert Lott, Jan Ditmarts. Proved, September 7, 1744. [13]
