Biography

American painter and teacher. Known for his portraiture and genre scenes, Anshutz was a co-founder of The Darby School.

Thomas Pollock Anshutz was born October 5, 1851 in Newport, Campbell, Kentucky, United States.[1] He was the son of Jacob Anshutz and Abbie.[2][3]

He grew up in Newport and Wheeling, West Virginia. His early art instruction took place at the National Academy of Design in the early 1870s. In 1875, he moved to Philadelphia and studied at the Philadelphia Sketch Club.

He married Effie Shriver Russell in 1892 in Wheeling, Ohio, West Virginia, United States.[4] The two spent their honeymoon in Paris, where Anshutz attends classes at Académie Julian. Together they had a son, Edward.[5][6]

In 1893 they returned to Philadelphia. He retired from teaching in the fall of 1911 due to poor health.

Anshutz died June 16, 1912 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. He was buried at Hillside Cemetery in Roslyn, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States.[7]
