Biography

Henry Andrewartha, the fourth child of Henry Andrawartha (1777-1831) and Mary Guy (1780-1853) and was baptised at St Hilary on 5 March 1815. The entry for his baptism notes that he was baptised at St Hilary owing to the illness of the Rector of Perranuthnoe.
He married Grace Jenkyn (1817-1884), the daughter of Henry Jenken and Mary Eva, at Gwinear on 22 September 1841 and they had seven children

Henry and Grace Andrewartha and their daughter Mary Ann emigrated to Canada in 1845, and in the mid to late 1850s editions of ‘Railton’s Trade Directories for City of London in the Province of Ontario’ entries identified Henry Andrewartha as a carpenter. Henry and Grace Andrewartha temporarily returned to Cornwall in 1861 with their surviving children and their youngest four children who were born in Canada were baptised at Gwinear on 27 February 1861. At the time of the 1861 British census Henry, Grace and their family were with Grace’s parents at Lanyon Vean in Gwinear.

At the time of the Canadian census of 1871, Henry, still a carpenter, and his family were living at Aldborough in Elgin County, Ontario. In this census the family name was recorded as Andrew. At the time of the Canadian 1881 census, Henry and Grace were still living at Aldborough although Henry was now described as a farmer.

Grace Andrewartha, nee Jenkyn, died at Aldborough in 1884 and nothing more is currently known of Henry and Grace’s family and descendants. - by John Smith
