Biography

This profile is part of the Andrewartha Name Study.

Molly was born about 1898, the third youngest of four children; and was the daughter of William Andrewartha and Laura Marsh.

Marriage. [1]
Dunbabin —Andrewartha, — On August 15, 1923, at St. John's Church, New Town, by the Rev. S Hughes, James Murdoch, son of the late Thomas Dunbabin, Marchwiel, Bream Creek, to Beatrice Mary (Molly), second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Andrewartha, New Town.

Dunbabin —Andrewartha, [2]
On Wednesday, August 15, 1923, at St. John's Church, New Town, a very pretty wedding took place. The Rector, Rev. S. H. Hughes, officiated, the bridegroom was Mr. James Murdoch Dunbabin, of "The Marchweil," Bream Creek, and the bride was Miss Molly Andrewartha, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs, W. G. Andrewartha of New Town.
The very pretty bride, who was given away by the father, wore a beautiful wedding gown of white satin grey adine, and a long tulle veil fastened with a coronet of orange blossom, she carried a sheaf of choice white flowers
The charming bridesmaids were Miss Enid Andrewartha, wore a frock of pink shot taffeta, and Miss Belle Dunbabin, who looked equally dainty in a frock of blue shot taffeta.

Family notes:

Mary Maud Pearce (Andrewartha) was very close to her niece Beatrice Mary (Mollie) Dunbabin (Andrewartha). This may have been because prior to their marriages they both lived in New Town. Further Arthur Henry Pearce's father John Pearce and grandfather Henry Pearce had been friendly with the Andrewarthas when the Andrewarthas lived in the Huon and Henry and John bought land down there. Additionally both Maud and Mollie were nurses. The Mercury of Wed 28 Dec 1921 recording Mollie passing the Nurses' Examinations thus -The following is a list of candidates who passed their Australian Trained Nurses' Association examination, held this month -General Nurses - … Mary B. Andrewartha (General Hospital Launceston), additionally both their husbands suffering from an affliction James Murdoch Dunbabin had a muscle disorder mainly affecting his eyes and hands and Arthur Henry Pearce went blind in 1914 from an inherited disease carried by the females but only affecting the males (Leber's disease). The nett result of this friendship was that the Lindsay Pearce and his family spent many holidays at Marchwiel. I, Graham Pearce, was born in 1948 and a photo exists of my Mother and myself on the porch at Marchwiel when I was around 8 months old. I remember Mollie as a caring lady with a shock of white hair and always willing to welcome hen's eggs my sister and I had found. My sister, who is some two years older than I, remembers Robert and Jimmy Dunbabin being made to wear party hats for her birthday (possibly 1948, 1949). It is probable that the extended Christmas holiday the Pearce's took at Marchwiel finished shortly after Mollie died in 1954. From 1958 to 1969 Graham and then his two brothers Arthur and Robert spent regular weekly holidays at Robert Dunbabin's new home at Marchwiel. Graham clearly remembers Marchwiel without any mains power - it only got connected in the 1960s In October 1969 the partnership for farming Marchwiel between Robert and Jimmy Dunbabin was terminated and Robert commenced farming at Mayfield north of Little Swanport. Of this Robert's wife Joyce later said to Graham Pearce - if it had not been for your father, Lindsay Pearce, Robert and I do not know what we would have done. The executors and trustees of Mollie Dunbabin's husband James Murdoch Dunbabin (1885 - 1973) were Lindsay Pearce (1918 - 1993) and Jim Dunbadin jnr.

Marriage [3]
Cotton — Dunbabin. — At the Memorial Church, Hobart, on September 27, 1950, Ruth, only daughter of John Dunbabin and the late Mrs. Dunbabin, Burnside, Sorell, to Francis Julian, youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Cotton, The Bend, Swansea.

Ruth Cotton (Dunbabin) was the only child of John and Florence (Florrie) who lived at Burnside, Orielton. She married Francis Joseph Julian (FJ or Tommy) Cotton late in life and they had no children.

Ruth took an active interest in the farm and maintained an extensive “prize-winning” garden.

She was seen by the local people as a “formidable woman”, by all accounts.

Tommy died early as a result of injuries received in a riding accident. Ruth continued to run the farm with help from Robert Bruce Dunbabin.

Ruth lived at Burnside all of her nearly 80 years and died in 1985. Robert Dunbabin then inherited Burnside.

After 1993 when Robert had given Burnside to his middle son Timothy Robert realised that in this modern world a farmers’ word was not good enough and owners required to have Title Deeds to their property.

Accordingly, Robert instructed his solicitors, Simmons Wolfhagen, to give the Title Deeds to Timothy. This took over a year.

Robert’s comment to Graham Pearce whose father Lindsay had worked at Simmons Wolfhagen from 1935 to 1992, I do not understand why SW had difficulty in finding the Title Deeds to Burnside - they had had them since 1897.
