Marriage
Andrewartha-Hoskins. [5] On the 6th June, at the residence of the bride's father, by special licence, by the Rev. T. Stansfield, William Henry, nephew of the late Rev. J. Andrewartha, to Mary Ann, eldest daughter of James Hoskins, Esq., of Mayfield, Port Esperance.
Sudden Death. The Mercury. (1887, April 21). [6]
It is with deep regret that we have to announce the death of Mr. W. H. Andrewartha, at his residence, Craig cottage, New Town, a few minutes after noon yesterday. Mr. Andrewartha was in town yesterday morning and went home shortly before noon. Most of his family being absent, he prepared some tea in his kitchen, and was in the act of looking for some sugar when his death took place.
His third son [7] was the only other person in the house at the time, and had gone into another room to look for the sugar when he heard a noise, and returning to the kitchen found his father on the floor, to all appearances dead.
He went outside and procured assistance, and Dr. Payne was called in about 12.30, who pronounced life extinct. The deceased had been complaining of feeling unwell for several days, and had called at Dr. Payne's residence in the morning, but the doctor was not at home.
Mr. Andrewartha had presided on the previous day at the election of two trustees for the Augusta Road Trust. He was an old colonist, was widely respected, and had, during a great portion of his career, filled various positions of public trust. He arrived in this colony when he was only 13 years of age with his uncle, the Rev. W. Andrewartha,[8] and after he left school he was associated with his uncle in the saw-mill trade at Flight's Bay. After that he took up the milling business with Mr. Andrew Gibbs, [9] of Recherche Bay. He then became manager of the Strathblane mill for Messrs. Manning and Co., which position he held for many years, and for some years afterwards was lessee of their mills.
He was in fact recognised almost as one of the fathers of the saw milling business in the South. While at Port Esperance he took a prominent part in the affairs of the district. He was elected chairman of the local road trust in 1876. Three years before this he was appointed a justice of the peace for the colony.
The place name of Blubber Head, at the northern entrance to Port Esperance, [12] may indicate shore-based bay whaling activity took place at the location in the 19th century.

And now we come to the early history of timber-getting at Raminea, where sawpits were used as late as 1850, until milling began there. The late Mr. J. C. Judd seems to have been the pioneer sawmiller there, followed by the late Messrs. W. H. Andrewartha and Henry Chesterman. In Howard Haywood's; "Visitors' and Colonists' Guide" of 1886, reference is made to two of these gentlemen: . . . more . . Trove
