Biography

George was born in 1847. He was the son of Henry Andrew and Sarah Ditto. He passed away in 1912.

George Andrew was born on May 6th, 1847, in Kesiusko County, Indiana and lived in that county until 1856 when he was taken by his parents to Grant County, Wisconsin. On December 13th, 1865 he enlisted in Company B, 33rd WisconsinVolunteer Infantry. He was wounded at Spanish Fork and was honorably discharged from the service June 23, 1865, at Madison, Wisconsin. He had enlisted for three years or until the war should close and served 18months and 10 days. On October 1, 1868 he was married to Miss Isabela Mood, at Boscobel, Wisconsin. To this union was born one son, Charles, who died at the age of six. His wife died in Iowa June 9, 1890. On March 29, 1892 he was married to Miss Lillie Jane Dewey. In the same year they removed to Iowa where they lived until in 1908 when they moved to Randolph, Nebraska. To this union there was born five children. George Jr., Ruth, Weir, Paul and Clyde, all of whom save Weir, who died in 1902, survive. George Andrew died at his home in Randolph, Nebraska, June 29, 1912,at the age of 65 years 1 month and 25 days. He is survived by his wife,four children, two brothers- John of Geneva, Nebraska, and Austin of Lake Preston, SD, and three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Richmond of Mt. Hope,Wisconsin, Mrs. George Streeter and Mrs. Lane of Lake Preston, SD. The funeral was held at his late home in Randolph, Nebraska on July 2, 1912. the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. E.J.T. Connely of the Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge had charge at the cemetery.



George Andrew and the Battles of the Civil War in which he fought: 1. Cold War, (first battle) fought under Grant and against Pemerton 2. Grand Gulf--under Grant 3. Jackson, Mississippi 4. 5. Champion Hill--under Grant. 85 men were burried out of the 33rdWisc. in one hole. 6. Black River--under Grant. Twelve miles from Vicksburg, Mississippi 7. Vicksburg, Mississippi--under Grant. A siege of three months. April1863 to July 4 1863. During this time the two sides would meet and talk with each other, the rebels were so hungry the asked the Union soldiersfor food. Pemberton was brought to the Union Army blindfolded under aflag of truce, to meet General Grant, to discuss terms of surrender.Pemberton surrendered his arm to Grant under a tree afterwards call the Pemberton Tree. Many soldiers to a piece of this tree as a souvenir.Pemberton surrendered 40,000 men here. Here Grant wrote his final answer of "No Conditional Surrender" 8. Black River (Again)--under Sherman. 9. Champion Hill 10. Jackson, Mississippi. Fought four days-- July 8 to 12-- 100 rebelsto one Union Soldier. Some fought bare footed. They would not let theUnion Army bury their dead. George and Lillie Andrew George Andrew and Miss Lillie Jane Dewey were married March 29, 1892, atMt. Ida, Wisconsin. They moved to Pierson, Iowa, where they lived until1902, when they moved to Randolph. George came ahead of the family to buy the land where the house was built for their new home. He bought the east half of block fifteen, Fisher, Randall Addition. He had the homebuilt on the southeast corner of the block fifteen, where it now standsat 512 south Douglas St. the home of Paul and Elsie Andrew. George found a house by the stand pipe, where the family lived while the new home was being built. When they moved to Randolph, the family consisted of Georgeand lIllie, and their children, George Melvin and Rugh May and Wier. Wier passed away in 1902. Paul Wesley was born in the house by the stand pipe and Clyde Donald was born in the new home.

George Andrew was a Civil War Veteran. He enlisted at Boscobel, Wisconsin for three years. He was a Private in Co. B, 33rd and 11thRegiments, Wisconsin Infantry. George was wounded in the leg at SpanishFort, near Mobile, Alabama. He was honorably discharged from service onJune 23, 1863, at Madison, WI. He enjoyed going to the G.A.R veterans reunions held in towns around here and Iowa. sometimes the family went along.

George was a dealer in farm real estate. He had several farms he rented out. When he passed away in 1912, he had one farm one mile west and sixmiles south of Randoph. The other farm was two miles west and north across the Northwestern Railroad track, on the west side of the road.

He was a private in Co. B 33rd Wisconsin Infantry enlisting 30 Dec. 1863 and discharged 23 Jun 1865 total service was 1 year, 5 months and 23 days.
